🐾 Real Essentials to Bring on Everyday Dog Walks

(None of the extras, just the basic have to’s.)
Let’s be honest — most “dog walking essentials” lists throw 1,00 random Amazon links at you. That’s not what this is. If I link to something, it’s because I’ve actually used it and believe it’s worth bringing.
This post isn’t about mountain hikes or all-day treks. It’s about those everyday walks — 1 to 3 miles around your neighborhood, on the beach, or your favorite nature trail. Quick, refreshing, and simple. Getting those steps in. Here's what you should actually bring.
💧 1. Bring Water — for You and Your Dog
If you bring water for yourself, your dog should have access to some too. Whether it’s warm or cool out, hydration matters.
Make sure your bottle has enough for both of you — and bring a simple collapsible dog bowl or a portable dog waterer.
These take up almost no space and make it super easy to share. I’ve used both, and the portable waterer is great when you’re on the go and don’t want to fuss with an extra bowl.

🏷️ 2. Make Sure Your Dog Has ID
Yes, microchipping is important — but it’s not instant help if your dog gets loose. A visible ID tag on your dog’s collar can be a lifesaver. It lets someone call you right away or bring your pup home without a vet visit. We will have a separate post on these after they have worn them awhile. Our dogs are in the woods, they get dirty, so hoping these hold up to some abuse, for now, I love them.

🥾 3. Dog Boots (Especially in Hot Weather)
Please don’t walk your dog on hot pavement or dry sand without checking the surface first. Here's an easy test:
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Dry beach sand, in particular, can get brutal. And let’s not forget about sand spurs — they will wedge between paw pads. I use dog boots for all daytime walks when it’s warm out, including at the beach.

(I’ll be writing a full post on paw protection soon — stay tuned.)
💩 4. Don’t Forget Poop Bags
Just toss a couple in your pocket or waist pack. Especially if your walking route goes near neighbors’ yards, it’s the courteous (and legal) thing to do.

🐶 Keep It Simple, Keep It Real
Dog walking doesn’t have to be complicated — just thoughtful. These few essentials make sure your dog stays safe, comfortable, and hydrated. You don’t need a bag full of gadgets. Just the real stuff that works. You can take it a step further if you want - first aid kit, Benadryl, etc….Up to you.
Let me know if you bring anything else on your walks — I’d love to hear what works for you!
