My husband and I go to Florida at least once a year. About 4 years ago, we were traveling the coast near Panama City. We were heading to Tampa to see a friend, but wanted to stay the night. We had our two dogs at the time with us. We couldn't find a pet friendly place anywhere. We kept driving. We came across a small hotel in a town called Port St. Joe in Gulf County. They allowed pets. The next morning, the motel owner told us the beaches were dog friendly even. We went onto Tampa the next day and spent a few days down there. Then...on the way back, we stated a few more nights in Port St. Joe. Since then, we stay there often. A lot of my Florida stock photos come from the area of Gulf County. I am in love with the area, the people are super friendly. Its primarily a fishing community, but great beaches and great food!
We had tried to make it for scallop season and was never able to. This year, last minute, we got to go. Their scallop season was cut very short due to an algae bloom in the area. But..our first scallop season....didn't find any, but we had a lot of fun snorkeling and swimming and chasing fish, horseshoe crabs and stingrays.
I just finished a short fun video with scenes from this exact area.
The shrimping boats and the birding in Florida always amazes me. Pelicans are by far one of my favorites to watch, normally, where you find shrimping boats, you will find pelicans......and many many other species of birds.
